A woman has been charged with armed carjacking after
she apparently lost control of the vehicle on Interstate 95 at PGA
Boulevard and broke her back in the crash. Crystal Chapa, 25, was at
her first appearance in court this morning in a wheelchair and back
brace. The judge set her bail at $35,000. Chapa was sentenced to 2 1/2
years in prison in 2002 in a plea deal after being charged in the
death of a premature baby she delivered after taking crack....

Congress Avenue in West Palm Beach set to reopen ...

The section of Congress Avenue between Okeechobee and
Palm Beach Lakes boulevards was expected to reopen by 7 a.m. today,
more than 24 hours late. The road was closed at 7 a.m. Saturday and
was supposed to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, but a 100-ton crane being
used to lift beams for a new overpass broke down. A new crane had to
be brought in, causing the delay, said Meredith Rapp, spokeswoman for
The Corradino Group, the engineering firm supervising the Interstate
95 widening....

Interstate crackdown aims to raise safety ...

Three motorists were arrested for drunk driving and 280
drivers were ticketed for speeding during last week's "Staying Alive
on 95" crackdown. Boynton Beach police issued 63 speeding tickets
during a four-hour period in the enhanced penalty zone on Interstate
95, Maj. Frank Briganti said. The fine for speeding in the 6-mile zone
south of Gateway Boulevard is $50 higher. "We need to get (more)
officers out on I-95 because without police presence the lives of
citizens are in danger," Briganti said. Boca Raton police stopped a
driver doing 110 mph just north of Yamato Road during the crackdown....

Kansas man arrested in fatal I-95 shooting ...

A Kansas man was arrested Wednesday after he was
identified as one of four people inside a car when the driver shot and
killed another driver on Interstate 95 in Delray Beach. Ricardo
Gordon, 25, of Wichita is charged with accessory after the fact of
second-degree murder. He is accused of helping the shooting suspect
flee from Florida and giving him refuge at his Kansas home. Michael
Reich, 19, was killed in the shooting July 24, 2005. His friend
Barbara Wallace was shot in the ankle but survived. Gordon's bail was
set at $150,000 Thursday morning. The alleged gunman, Gillion Graham
of West Palm Beach, and several friends had gathered outside Club Boca
before the I-95 confrontation....
